Not all dogs can be saved

As a dog rescue, I receive an average of 10-15 e-mails a day and 5-6 phone calls from the public wanting assistance with a dog. This assistance can vary greatly, from “where can we bring our dog to get rid of it” to “need advice on starving dog next door”.

To be blunt, we don’t need donations of dogs. We can find plenty of dogs to rescue on our own. I can tell you honestly that we aren’t sitting around waiting for the public to bring us dogs.

We are a dog rescue but we are not dog rehabilitators. We cannot miraculously make your dog non-aggressive to people, children, cats, dogs, or unicorns. As a rule, if your dog has a behavior problem that is causing you to not want him, we probably aren’t going to be able to place him either. If you really love your dog then make some sacrifices and efforts to keep him. If he jumps your fence, then crate him inside the house during the day and monitor him when he is outside or take him for walks or to the dog park for exercise. If you can afford it, contact a trainer or dog behaviorist for advice, then FOLLOW IT! If you have dogs that aren’t getting along and you aren’t able to re-home one of them, then rotate them in crates, allowing each dog ample time to be out of the crate and with the family.

If you contact me about a dog being abused or neglected in your neighborhood, I will do everything I can to find you the right people to contact, but I can’t go and steal the dog in the dark of night like some dog rescue ninja, as cool as that might be.

If your dog is ill and you can’t afford medical treatment, again I will try to help you find assistance, but we run our rescue on very limited funds and just cannot afford to help every dog needing medical attention, as much as we wish we could.

If you are wanting to re-home your dog because he is old or not getting along with the new puppy you just got, well SHAME ON YOU!! Hopefully, you will never be old and need special attention and care or be replaced by a younger, cuter version.

However, if you have found a dog and you are willing to foster the dog until we can find a home for it or until a foster home can be found, or if you are willing to pay for the vetting costs (spay/neuter, vaccinations), then we will do everything we can to help you. We are more than willing to help those that will meet us half-way.

I love dogs, I really do, or I wouldn’t be doing this, but the sad reality is that not all dogs can be saved. All anyone can do is help the one right in front of them and then go to the next one.

Taking Donations

We frequently take dogs into our program who have health issues such as broken bones, upper respiratory infections, eye disorders, teeth issues, skin problems, heartworm and erhliccia positive cases, parvovirus, distemper, coccidia, just to name a few of the medical problems that prevent a dog from being eligible for adoption at shelters and therefore putting them on the euthanasia list. We do everything within our power and financial ability to help these dogs get better and prepare them for a life that is painfree and happy.

There are also various other costs that are involved in running an animal rescue. While dogs are in foster homes waiting for their forever homes, we provide monthly heartworm preventative, and flea/tick preventative if needed. Many dogs need crates in order to stay in a foster home, which we provide when we can. We also provide dog food in some cases. There is also the cost of leashes, collars, tags, and insurance. Without donations from our supporters, we simply could not fulfill our mission to help the abandoned, neglected, and abused dogs of Oklahoma.

Please be assured that 100% of your donation is going to help the dogs that are entrusted in our care. All donations made directly to Forever Yours Dog Rescue are tax-deductible.

Annual Garage Sale Event

Our primary fundraiser is the Forever Yours Annual Garage Sale event! Held for two days (a Friday and Saturday), usually in May or June, this event has grown into a huge event, with thousands of items donated for sale. Preparations for this event are started a month prior to the event, when we start to take donations and begin the sorting and pricing process.

In the past we have had many knick-knacks, children’s items, books, small and large applicances, lamps, dishes, seasonal items, clothes, shoes, furniture, sports items, and numerous other items donated. We also have a bake-sale (weather permitting) and have cold soft drinks available for purchase as well.

This is another volunteer opportunity, as we need people to man our donation drop-off site, sort and price items, and help both with the actual sale and the clean-up. We also need transporters to pick up donations of furniture.

Please check back to our website for the date of our 2013 Annual Garage Sale!
